空道および大道塾創始者であり全日本空道連盟初代理事長および大道塾初代塾長・代表師範 東孝が創設した打撃系総合武道「空道（くうどう）」とは、現実の闘争を想定した21世紀生まれの“新しい武道”です。
この競技は頭部に「ネオヘッドギア空（ねおへっどぎあくう）」という特別に開発された補助具を着用します。認められる技は、突き技、蹴り技に加え、投げ技、頭突き、肘打ち、金的蹴り、寝技、寸止めマウントパンチ、関節技、絞め技などです。このように、様々な攻撃が認められる実戦的ルールですが、ただ己の強さだけを追求するのではなく、武道としての「社会性」、指定補助具やルール整備による競技としての「安全性」を兼ね備え、又、観る側のわかりやすさをも追求しています。
過去三回の世界大会を経て世界各地にブームを巻き起こし、2012年5月「特定非営利活動法人日本ワールドゲームズ協会（JWGA）」への加盟を承認されたのを機に、第2のオリンピックと呼ばれる「ワールドゲームズ」の公式競技参加を目標に、社会的により広く認知された武道スポーツを目指しています。（2012.12）

空道の理念
One of the purposes of martial arts, especially BUDO (Judo, Karate-do, Kendo, Aikido, “Kudo” and so on) is to train the mind and body to become strong and utilize that strength for the improvement of our community
格闘技、特に武道（柔道、空手道、合気道、空道など）を習う大きな目的の一つは心身を鍛練し、社会の進歩に役立てるためである。
*As is well known, the word “do” in Budo means “a way of life”
*周知の通り、空道の中の“道” は“生き方”、人生の方向を意味する。
Also it is a useful method of cultivating the youth who will contribute to the society through the tough times and events in their life
また、厳しい人生の時や出来事の中にあっても、社会に貢献しようとする青少年を育てるのに役立つ。
Nowadays, education for the youth in the world is on the verge of decay.Budo is, we can dare to say, a vital “tool” to discipline them and a guide even in ourselves.
今日青少年教育は崩壊の危機に瀕している。
敢えて言えば、武道は彼らを鍛練し、彼等自身の指針となる強力な“手段、道具”である。
So we have to evade being misunderstood about the value of “Budo” due to bad impression that mere martial arts apt to give people as “violence without philosophy”
だから、武道が「哲学、思想を持たない単なる暴力」というような悪い印象を持たれることを避けなければならない。
Choosing this philosophical word “KU” as our motto/idea, we name this Budo, “KUDO”
我々はこの“武道”の修行を“空”という理念、概念の元に行おうと志し、これを“空道”と命名する。
“ KU” means three important philosophical concepts
空道の“空”には3つの重要な哲学的意味がある。
無常観 Mujou kan
A view of life/world as something transient and empty” In other words, anything that has a shape be crushed or changed in its form someday .(Therefore it is no good for us to attached or obsessed by things)
人世は移ろい実態がないものである。換言すれば、どんな物でもいつかは変化し崩壊する。（だから事物に拘り、執着することは無駄である）
相互依存 Sougo izon
Interdependancy”All things exist only because they depend on each other (Therefore one should not be Self-righteousness, or self-conceited)
全ての事物は互いに依存（関連、影響）しあって存在する。（だから、独善的、独り善がり、自惚れ、唯我独尊、自己過信をしてはいけない。）
Above mentioned two idea lead to following third one
上記の二つから以下の理念が導かれる。
不偏不党 Huhen Huto 開かれた心、偏らないこと、自由主義。
open mind, impartiality, liberalism” We can gain all things if we try to do so earnestly, but in order to be free, we should never persist with them, even day by day affaires, separating ourselves from prejudice, bias and so on
我々は熱心に取り組めばなんでも達成、到達できる。しかし自由であるためには、それらに執着してはならない（拘りを捨てなければならない）日々の出来事、偏見や、先入観と言ったものから離れることだ。
This perspective may be expressed “Open-Mindism (Grand master Azuma’s Original term) ”
この大局観、先見性は“開かれた心主義”(東塾長の造語）と表現しても良いかも知れない。
But It never means the way of “Self-centred”, “egoistical” but “Open mind with generous”,“humble heart in robust belief”
しかし、このことは“自己中”や“利己主義”を意味するものではなく、寛容な開かれた心、堅固な信念からの謙虚さ、を意味するものである。
So for those who choose “Kudo” as Budo of our life, should think much of these three words
だから、「空道」を修行する者はこれらの3つの観念、概念を（人生の方向と捉え）常に意識すべきである。
That is to say, if we meet the any kind of difficulties we must face them positively and never evade without challenge against them in order to gain the ultimate, highest truth
すなわち、我々はどんなに困難なことに出会っても、人生の至高に到達するためには、全てを前向きに捉え、決して挑戦を避けてはならないのだ。
